“Sparkle was fabulous and my partner and I truly enjoyed the event, counting ourselves blessed to have witnessed all the beauty in the room. Thank you to all who attended and made this one of the happiest times in my life. I truly can't wait until the next time.” -Tina P.
130 wonderful people, from seemingly everywhere, including travelers from Oregon, Nevada, Kentucky, and Wyoming, attended the transgender event of the year! Sparkle was an elegant formal ball and celebration of transgender unity. Whether you were CD, TG, TS, MtF, FtM, a partner, a family member, a friend, or an ally -- everyone was welcome to share in the evening of dinner, music, dancing, and entertainment.
“I have attended many gala events over the years, and I have to say that Sparkle outshined them all! As an out-of-towner I was made to feel very welcome. The organizers thought of everything to make the evening special. It was truly one of the most memorable nights of my life.” -Amanda R.
Even before entering the elegant surroundings of the chandeliered Martinique Ballroom, the ambience of the reception area gave the feeling that something special was about to happen. Near the ballroom entrance was a “Ruby Rendezvous” vignette which included a gorgeous red dress and ruby slippers, surrounded by vintage suitcases and accessories. Once inside, attendees were greeted by smiling hostesses and treated to more themed decorations, including a huge balloon arch, lovely color-coordinated table decorations, and red roses everywhere!
Pre-dinner highlights included a speech from the night’s keynote speaker, Dr.
Alice Novic, respected author of the book Alice in Genderland. Alice
held the crowd’s attention by sharing personal anecdotes, excerpts from her
book, and lessons gleaned from her experience as a mental health professional
and a member of the transgender community.
“What a lovely evening I had at River City Sparkle. I so wish L.A. had something like this! I want to thank the Gems for coordinating this wonderful event. It was fantastic, and I
Dinner was just as elegant as the surroundings. The cuisine was of a high
standard, featuring tempting entrees such as char-grilled king salmon
fillet, stuffed chicken breast duxelle, or roasted beef tenderloin
medallions. Everyone agreed the selections offered on the dessert carts were
to die for!
After dinner there was a fabulous live performance from out of state
entertainers Tom and Shondra. They had everyone on the edge of their seats,
clapping their hands, and enjoying a full hour of fun with toe-tapping show
tunes and beautiful ballads from Broadway musicals. There was even audience
participation, as Andi, Leann, and Rebecca took the stage with Shondra and
performed "Pink Cadillac." The closing number, “I Am What I Am” from La Cage
aux Folles, ended the performance on an emotional high note.
The evening finished off with a DJ dance party complete with a huge dance floor and lightshow.
River City Sparkle’s first year was excellent, but its second year was truly outstanding. Planning for River City Sparkle 2010 is already underway, so all those who were unable to experience the magic this year will have another opportunity. Let the countdown begin!
“The Sparkle event was absolutely wonderful. That was the most fun I have had in years.” -Gedie L.
